Obituary

Charles R. "Bob" Holland , age 97 of Lake Placid, Florida and formerly of Elwood and Syracuse, passed away on February 17, 2023 at Advent Hospital in Lake Placid after a long, well-lived life.  He was born August 19, 1925 in Elwood, the son of James R. and Stella (Welborn) Holland.  Bob was a 1943 graduate of Frankton High School and attended Purdue University for two years.  His college was interrupted by his enlistment in the U.S. Army during World War II.  During his service, he was stationed in Germany and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Following Armistice, he continued his service working security for the Nuremberg Trials.  His military service affected him significantly.  After leaving the Army, Bob married his soulmate, Miriam Tubbs, on August 29, 1946, and they shared over 72 years of marriage together before her passing in 2019.

Bob went to work for the Orestes Canning Company (now Red Gold, Inc.) and ultimately retired as Vice-President of the business.  He later joined with his brother, Dick, as a co-owner of Holland Insurance Services in Tipton where he and Miriam worked for over 10 years.  After retirement, Bob and Miriam enjoyed living at their home on Lake Wawasee in Syracuse before moving to warmer weather in Lake Placid, Florida in 1992.  Bob was formerly active in both the Elks Lodge and the Masonic Lodge.  He especially loved fishing every opportunity he had.  It is comforting to know that Bob and Miriam have been reunited together in Heaven.

Bob's family legacy includes a daughter, Becky Beckley of Lake Placid, FL; son, James Holland; granddaughter, Kelly Campbell; several nieces and nephews including Janet Magee of Palm City, FL, Jeff (Kathy) Holland of Missouri, and Chris (Mary) Holland of Greenfield; and cousins, Sarah Belle Prichard Dye and Nancy Ellen Kamman.  Bob was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Miriam Holland; granddaughter, Amanda Beckley; and 4 siblings, R.W. "Dick" Holland, James Holland, Jane Holland, and Mary Elizabeth Holland.

A funeral service celebrating Bob's life will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Bill Johnston of Grace Community Church, officiating.  Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Army and Elwood V.F.W. Honor Guard.  Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11 am to 1 pm prior to the funeral on Saturday at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.  Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
