Charles E.
Meyer
Apr 16, 1922 — Apr 29, 2024
Charles E. Meyer , age 102 of Maumee, Ohio and formerly of Jonesboro, Indiana, went to be with the Lord on April 29, 2024 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio after a long, full life. He was born April 16, 1922 in Elwood, the son of Clair and Eunice (Mock) Meyer. Charles attended Dickey School north of Elwood before graduating from Elwood High School in 1939. He continued his education at Ball State Teachers College earning both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in education. During this time, he married the love of his life, Helen M. Welches on August 30, 1942, and they shared over 58 years of marriage together before her passing in 2001. Charles was a beloved school teacher at Fairmount and Mississinewa High Schools teaching industrial arts for 41 years and retiring in 1984. He was known as "Doc" to his students because he regularly wore a lab coat, and one of his most notable students was the late actor, James Dean of Fairmount.
Charles was a man of deep faith and was formerly a member of the First Nazarene Church in Elwood and later the First Church of the Nazarene in Marion. He served in many capacities at the church in addition to serving as Treasurer for the Nazarene District office. Charles was a member of the Indiana Retired Teachers Association. He was an avid woodworker who made numerous keepsakes for his family in addition to building his own homes in Rigdon and Jonesboro. Charles especially enjoyed fishing at Yellow Creek Lake and helping with yearly bible school programs at his church. He was well-known for being a "gentle man" as well as a Christian "gentleman" in every way. Charles will be remembered for his organizational skills and attention to meticulous details. Although he will be missed, his family is comforted knowing he has been reunited with Helen in Heaven.
Charles' family includes his daughter, Carol Meyer-Frendt of Maumee, Ohio; extended family members, David and Jane Burton of Elwood; 4 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great grandchildren; several special nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and neighbors. Charles was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Helen Meyer; daughter, Janice Kay Meyer who passed at birth; sister, Carrie Mae Daugherty; and son-in-law, Loren Frendt.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 pm on Friday, May 10, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. A funeral celebrating Charles' life and legacy will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, May 11, 2024 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with nephew, Pastor Vaughn Welches presiding.
