Charles R. Mayfield, age 94, a long-time resident of Elwood, died Monday, February 13, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor in Tipton following a brief illness. He was born June 21, 1917 in Seymour the son of Charles A. "Gus" and Fanny (Ray) Mayfield. He retired from Heritage Federal Savings and Loan (formerly Elwood Federal Savings and Loan) in 1982 as the Vice President after 27 years of service. Charlie graduated from Shields Memorial High School in 1935 and also graduated from Seymour Business College. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1945 during World War II. He married Kathryn E. Stanfield on February 3, 1945. Charlie began his career in banking at the Seymour National Bank. He moved to Elwood in 1951 and began working for Citizen's Bank. He was a devoted member of East Main Street Christian Church for more than 61 years where he was an Elder Emeritus. He was past president of the Elwood Lions Club; member of the Elwood Elks Lodge #368; member of the Elwood Masonic Lodge #230; Past Master of the Seymour Masonic Lodge; and member of the York Rite. He was also a Past Patron of the Order of Eastern Star in Elwood. Charlie was a State Master Councilor of the Order of DeMolay in 1937. He was a longtime DeMolay Dad in Elwood and was Indiana DeMolay Dad of the Year in 1968. He and his wife Kathryn were members of a Euchre club in Elwood for more than 50 years. He enjoyed playing golf, and especially loved spending time with his family.
Survivors include 2 Children, Nancy (husband Larry) Ritchie of Elwood and Steven (wife Marlene) Mayfield of Anderson; 4 Grandchildren, Brian (wife Kellie) Ritchie of Anderson, Kathy Ritchie and fiancé Eric Couch both of Anderson, Lisa (husband Neil) Thompson of Anderson, Michelle (husband Matt) Friend of Muncie; 5 Great-grandchildren, Ashley and Tyler Ritchie of Anderson, Abigail and Carter Friend of Muncie, and Emma Thompson of Anderson; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 60 years, Kathryn E. Mayfield who died December 15, 2005.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM Friday, February 17, 2012 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Roger Gardner of East Main Street Christian Church officiating.
Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by the U.S. Military and the Elwood V.F.W. Honor Guard. Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 PM on Thursday, February 16, 2012 at the funeral home, and will include a Masonic memorial service at 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
