Charles Lee "Chuck" Phenis, age 75 of Elwood, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 7, 2016 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood. He was born June 28, 1941 in Elwood, the son of Charles F. and Twila J. (Hobson) Phenis. He retired in 1992 from Chrysler Corporation in Kokomo where he worked in production for more than 26 years. Chuck graduated from Wendell L. Willkie High School in 1959 where he was active in football and tennis during his high school years. He married Mary Sue Harris on June 18, 1960 and they shared more than 56 years of marriage together. Chuck loved all sports. In addition to football and basketball, he formerly bowled and played both golf and tennis. He was very supportive of youth sporting leagues and coached little league baseball and took numerous kids to youth bowling leagues and tournaments. Chuck was an avid fan of I.U. and Penn State. He was a good man who was devoted to his family and loved to read his Bible. He will be remembered for his generous spirit, his dry sense of humor, and his egg sandwiches.
Chuck's family includes his wife, Mary Sue Phenis of Elwood; 2 children, Michael (wife Angela) Phenis of Markleville and Bryan Phenis of Greenfield; brother, George Tranbarger of Elwood; 6 grandchildren, Alicia Hoose, Chris (wife Kylee) Phenis, Justin (wife Nicole) Phenis, Bryce Phenis, Auston Phenis, and Conner Phenis; 4 great-grandchildren, Preston, Ashlyn, Cohen, and Wesley. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Fran Phenis.
A funeral service celebrating Chuck's life will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Ken Horning of the First Church of the Nazarene officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM prior to the funeral service on Wednesday at the funeral home.
