Beulah May Murphy, age 97 of Elwood, died Tuesday December 28, 2010 at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood following an extended illness. She had previously resided in Muncie, Indiana until 2009. She was born June 3, 1913 in Elwood. She graduated from Elwood High School in 1930. She earned a bachelor?s degree in English and history at the University of Wisconsin in 1951 and a master?s degree in library science in 1952. She retired in 1978 as a senior revisions librarian at Ball State University in Muncie. Miss Murphy served in the United States Navy as a WAVE from June 1943 until November 1945. During that time she was assigned to the Secret and Confidential Mail and File section for the Chief of Naval Operations in Washington, D.C. and later held a similar post in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She also served in a civil service position with the Army Library Service from 1952 to 1954 and 1958 to 1961 stationed in Guam, Japan and South Korea. Survivors include: great-nephew - Thomas (wife Beverly) Austin of Elwood; great-great niece - Elizabeth Heim and great-great-great niece - Kennedy Heim both of Elwood. Also surviving is niece - Retha (husband Ron) Harris of California; 2 great-nieces - Jessie (husband Bill) Onks of Alabama and Jennipher Harris of California; 2 great-great-nieces - Sarah and Rachel Onks of Alabama. She was preceded in death by: parents - James M. and Elizabeth M. (Brenton) Murphy; 4 brothers - Harry L. Murphy, James C. Murphy, Claude Murphy, and Theadore Murphy; sister - Garnet H. (Murphy) Austin; and 3 half-sisters - Stella (Murphy) Fenn, Bessie (Murphy) Legg, and Eva (Murphy) Wright. A private memorial service will be officiated by Rev. Chris Dare.
