Betty L. Mottweiler, age 88, a long-time resident of Elwood, died Saturday, November 30, 2013 surrounded by her family at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following an extended illness. She was born on April 13, 1925 in Alexandria, the daughter of George W. and Ethel I. (Silvey) Benge. Betty married Albert E. Mottweiler on October 22, 1944. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker most of her life. Betty was a member of the Central Wesleyan Church in Elwood, and was proud to be a volunteer at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital for more than 25 years. Betty was a member of the "Movin' On" Club and formerly volunteered with the Elwood "Meals on Wheels" program for many years. She especially enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable garden, baking, and spending time with her loving family. Betty was also well-known for selling delicious, homemade rolls for many years in the community.
Betty's family includes 3 children, Larry (wife Jean) Mottweiler of Elwood, Albert Mottweiler of Elwood, and Joe (wife Carolyn) Mottweiler of Marion; daughter-in-law, Sherry Mottweiler of Elwood; 3 sisters, Leona Auler of Alexandria, Shirley Brotherton of Alexandria, and Murlia Remington of Richmond; 7 grandchildren, Beth (Dave) Maitlen, Bob (Kelly) Mottweiler, Angie (Dave) Miller, Jenny Mottweiler, Fred (Andrea) Mottweiler, Adam Mottweiler, and Alan (Jenny) Mottweiler; 15 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of more than 33 years, Albert E. Mottweiler who died March 23, 1978; 2 sons, Gary Mottweiler and Michael Mottweiler; 2 brothers, George J. Benge and Harry Benge; sister, Lucille Vanetta-Shoemaker; and an infant sister.
A Celebration of Life funeral service will be conducted on Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Ben Capshaw of the Central Wesleyan Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 2 to 7 PM on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home, and will include a St. Vincent Volunteers Memorial Service at 6:00 PM.
