Betty J. Long age 88, a lifelong resident of Elwood, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 4, 2012 surrounded by her family at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood following a very brief illness. She was born June 8, 1924 in Elwood, the daughter of George W. and Jessie H. (Belzer) Hunt. Betty was self-employed as a beautician for over 30 years in Elwood. She graduated in 1943 from Elwood High School, and later received a Masters designation from Apex Beauty College in Anderson. She married Harold L. Long on June 22, 1945. She was a member of the Shiloh Friends Church and also formerly attended Grace United Methodist Church in Elwood for many years. Betty enjoyed reading her Bible, cooking, embroidery, and quilting. She was an avid I.U. Basketball and Colts Football fan, and enjoyed watching NCIS and American Idol on television. Betty especially loved spending time with her family and friends; and was well known for sending birthday cards to everyone.
Her family includes a son, Darrel L. (wife Mary Ellen) Long of Elwood; 5 daughters, Leatha J. (husband Dennis) Robinson of Cape Coral, FL, Kathryn E. (husband Michael) Humphrey of Frankton, Pamela J. (husband James) Coots of Elwood, Patricia A. (husband Gary) Simmons of Elwood and Sandra K. (husband Kevin) Fern of Elwood; 7 grandchildren, Derek (wife Sabrina) Robinson, Brad (wife Amy) Robinson, Danielle Sheets, Brittany (husband Mitch) Street, Paul Humphrey, Travis Hobbs, and Krystal Fritz; 4 great-grandchildren, Jensen Wyatt Williams, Ashley Robinson, Leila Street and Landree Street; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of nearly 50 years, Harold L. Long who died December 13, 1995; and 4 siblings, Georgie Gray, Melvin Hunt, Calvin Hunt, and Audrey Bailey.
A celebration of Betty's life will be conducted on Monday October 8, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Rev. Gary Simmons of the Shiloh Friends Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Elwood City Cemetery. Visitation will be held 2 to 6 PM Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home.
