Beatrice I.
Kalahar
Sep 4, 1921 — Oct 16, 2019
Beatrice I. Kalahar , age 98 and formerly of Jackson, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 16, 2019 at Elwood Health and Living Center following a long, well-lived life. She recently resided in Elwood, Indiana to be near her son, Patrick. She was born September 4, 1921 in Traverse City, Michigan, the daughter of Sheldon Fred and Ica (Moorman) Tucker. She was a graduate of Traverse City High School at the young age of 16. Bea married Paul Robert "Bob" Kalahar on March 4, 1946 and they shared over 53 years of marriage together until his passing in 1999. Bea worked in banking as a teller for many years. She had the ability to solve complex mathematical computations in her head, and she was recognized as the go-to person to find and correct banking errors. This ability led to her promotion to the position of head bank teller at the National Bank of Lansing. Bea also worked as a secretary at a real estate office for many years until her first retirement. She later re-entered the work force in banking until her last retirement in 1993. She was always known for her exemplary work ethic, attendance records, attention to detail, and her high quality of work. During WWII she also worked in the Office of Price Administration (OPA) and on the Ration Board, being selected due to her reputation as a woman of character and integrity.
Bea's family includes 2 sons, Patrick (wife Jenny) Kalahar of Elwood and Chris (wife Kim) Kalahar of Oakland, CA; several nieces and nephews; and a special niece and former caretaker, Mary Whitson of California.
Bea was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Brian Kalahar; 3 brothers, Lawrence Tucker, Fred Tucker, and Tommy Tucker; 2 sisters, Leah Koss and Carey Sublett; and 2 infant grandchildren, Katrina and Deven Kalahar.
Per Bea's wishes, cremation will take place and no services are planned at this time. Arrangements have been entrusted to Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood. Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
