Arthur J.
Haynes
Jul 20, 1937 — Oct 13, 2022
Arthur Jay "Art" Haynes , age 85 of Elwood and formerly of Frankton and Alexandria, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 13, 2022 surrounded by his family at home after an extended illness. He was born July 20, 1937 in Peru, the son of Floyd K. and Eva P. (Bowman) Haynes. Art was a 1955 graduate of Roann High School and later graduated from the General Motors Tool Maker Apprenticeship Program to become a machine builder and designer. He retired from Delco Remy in Anderson after 30 years as a machine builder and later retired from Continental Design Co. in Anderson after an additional 10 years. Art married Rachel A. Tucker on October 11, 1959, and together they shared over 60 years of marriage and raising their daughters in Frankton.
Arthur was an active member of Grace United Methodist Church in Elwood. He enjoyed woodworking in his free time and was an avid car enthusiast. Art installed a fuel-injection system on his 1957 Chevy, and he enjoyed showing how fast the car could go. He loved racing cars, drag racing, and was proud to win a state racing championship. Later in life, he also enjoyed restoring antique tractors and could be seen regularly driving the tractors in local parades. Art will be remembered for being a quiet-natured man who was extremely intelligent. He and his brother-in-law, Tom, enjoyed numerous fishing adventures together and had lake properties near one another for many years. More than anything, Arthur was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed nothing more than surrounding himself with family.
Arthur's family legacy includes his wife, Rachel Haynes of Elwood; 3 daughters Lynnee Melling of Elwood, Denise Baldwin (Gene Logan) both of Alexandria, and Susan (Michael) Lehman of Middlebury; 4 grandchildren, Ashley (John) Pine, Jessica (T.J.) Falin, Megan Lehman, and Dustin (Suzanne) Baldwin; 13 great-grandchildren; Ella, Lilou, Lincoln, Alexis, Parker, Shelby, Logan, Adalynn, Amelia, Deklyn, Emmalyn, Rosalie and another expected very soon, Evangeline; brother-in-law Don Tucker; sister-in-law Rosie (Tucker) Whisenhunt; special family members, Tom and Martha Bennett; and several nieces and nephews. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, John William Haynes, Judith Nygard, and Betty Jane Creek; grandson, Jadd Everson; and sons-in-law, Bruce Everson and Andrew Melling.
A funeral service celebrating Arthur's life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, October 19, 2022 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Bill Johnston of Grace United Methodist Church officiating.
