Annabelle B. Carpenter , age 96 and a lifelong resident of Elwood and rural Atlanta, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at home after a long, full life. She was born on July 29, 1923 in Elwood, the daughter of Floyd and Pearl (Bright) Hodge. She was a 1941 graduate of Elwood High School. Annabelle married Fred Carpenter, Jr. on June 24, 1944, and they shared over 52 years of marriage together before his passing in 1996. She started working in production for Delco Electronics in Kokomo, and then took leave for several years to devote time to raising all her children. She later returned to work and retired in 1986 after 25 combined years of service. Annabelle was a longtime member of the Aroma United Methodist Church in Atlanta and a member of the Elwood Order of Eastern Star. She loved fishing, camping with her family, and working with needle point. More than anything, Annabelle loved spending time with her children and grandchildren
Annabelle's surviving family includes twin daughters, Carol Stansberry of Sparta, TN and Janet Moon of Lorida, FL; son, Larry (wife Barbara) Carpenter of Elwood; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; and 2 nieces. Other family members include half-siblings, Louise Baldwin, Doris Covington, and Kenny Hodge.
She was preceded in death by both her parents; husband, Fred Carpenter, Jr.; daughter, Mary Alice Armstrong; brother, Norman Edward Hodge; half-siblings, Robert Hodge and Zelma Hodge; and granddaughter, Tamara Sue Kerst.
A funeral service celebrating Annabelle's life will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Chaplain Rob Mifflin officiating. Burial will follow privately in the Aroma Cemetery in rural Atlanta. Visitation for family and friends will be held from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm prior to the funeral on Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Aroma United Methodist Church through the funeral home. Online condolences and memories may be shared at copherfeslermay.com.
