Alice F. (Rittenhouse) Delaplane, age 91 of Elwood, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2015 at Community Parkview Care Center in Elwood following a long, well-lived life. She was born on October 8, 1923 in Elwood, the daughter of William & Nellie (Davis) Flowers. In addition to raising and caring for a large family, she formerly worked as a salesperson at the Sears Catalog Store in Elwood and Tam's Drugstore in Elwood for many years. Alice was a 1941 graduate of Elwood High School, and later married Lester Rittenhouse on May 15, 1943. She was a devout Christian and an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Elwood where she was formerly a member of the church board, Sunday School Teacher, and co-treasurer of the church. Alice also formerly enjoyed spending time in Florida, and was a member and past president of the Citrus County Writers Guild and the Seam-Rippers Quilting Guild. After the death of her first husband, she married Jack Delaplane on January 25, 1990. More than anything, Alice was devoted to her family and she leaves behind a legacy of family members and good friends who will miss her dearly.
Alice's family includes 5 children, Sharon (husband Larry) Shallenberger of Elwood, James (wife Shirley) Rittenhouse of Bringhurst, Diana (husband Terry) Lykins of Surprise, AZ, Ted (wife Mary) Rittenhouse of Perkinsville, and Danny (wife Gena) Rittenhouse of Elwood; 2 step-children, Tommie Ann (husband Ron) Bell and Garry Delaplane; 2 sisters, Dorothy Shepard of Atlanta, and Billie McKinley of Connersville; 11 grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Lester Rittenhouse in 1986; second husband, Jack Delaplane in 2006; sister, Mary Burton; and 2 brothers, Oliver Flowers, and Charles Flowers.
A funeral service celebrating Alice's life will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home in Elwood with Pastor Steve Sherwood of Fairview Baptist Church in Kokomo officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Elwood. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, July 27, 2015 from 4 to 8 PM at Copher-Fesler-May Funeral Home. Alice's family would like to thank the staff of Community Parkview for the excellent care and respect provided to their mother.
